1995-11-18 Jacob Matlala w tdec 5 Paul Weir, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland - WBO. Referee: Ismael Fernandez. Scorecards: 38-37, 38-37, 38-37. Although he made a positive start, Weir (107¾) was soon being outworked all the way by Matlala (105¼), who on getting inside rarely relaxed. Dropped without a count in the fifth, after finding his feet the champion was jumped on and hit with several combinations before a cut appeared over his right eye. There was no doubt that Weir believed the damage was caused by headwork, but although the doctor thought it was okay for him to continue the referee unfortunately misread him and called the fight off after 2.36 of the round had elapsed. With that, the judges’ scorecards were brought in to play in order to decide the winner.
