1995-11-22 [[Paul Jones]] w pts 12 [[Verno Phillips]], Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Sheffield, England - WBO. Referee: Ismael Fernandez. Scorecards: 114-113, 116-111, 113-113. It wasn’t a great start for Jones (153½) when floored by a sharp right-hand counter in the opening round, but he boxed his way back into the contest and never looked back against a surprisingly lethargic champion. With Jones as slippery as an eel, Phillips (154) found him too difficult a target and the majority of what little scoring there was in the first half of the contest came from the Englishman. Although Phillips remained the aggressor he was unable to strike home more than a single punch at a time against the elusive Jones, who, despite being docked a point for butting in the ninth, was good value for his majority points win. Following the contest, Jones claimed that he’d suffered a burst left eardrum in the fifth.
