1995-11-22 Paul Jones w pts 12 Verno Phillips, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Sheffield, England - WBO. Referee: Ismael Fernandez. Scorecards: 114-113, 116-111, 113-113. It was not a great start for Jones (153½) when floored by a sharp right-hand counter in the opening round, but boxing his way back into the contest he never looked back against a surprisingly lethargic champion. With Jones as slippery as an eel, Phillips (154) found him too difficult a target, the majority of what little scoring there was in the first half of the contest coming from the Englishman. Although Phillips remained the aggressor he was unable to strike home more than a single punch at a time against the elusive Jones, who despite being docked a point for butting in the ninth was good value for his majority points win. Following the contest, Jones claimed that he had suffered a burst left eardrum in the fifth.
Booked to defend the WBO version of the title against Bronco McKart on 1 March 1996, Jones forfeited his belt when withdrawing immediately prior to the contest claiming an injury to his right hand. So that a title fight could go ahead on that date, Santos Cardona was drafted in to meet McKart for the vacant crown.
