1995-12-09 Frans Botha nc 12 Axel Schulz, Hans Martin Schleyer Hall, Stuttgart, Germany - IBF. Referee: Rudy Battle. Fighting for the title relinquished by George Foreman, Schulz (222¾) was expected to win in front of his home fans but it was Botha (227) who initially got the nod by scores of 116-112, 118-111, 113-115 in what was a poor advert for a championship fight. There were no knockdowns and few highlights, and both men fought wildly at times, Schulz finishing the fight with both eyes closing.

However, having failed a post-fight drugs test, Botha was eventually stripped of the IBF version of the championship by the courts in March 1996 and the fight result classified as a no-contest. Following that, Schulz and Michael Moorer were selected to contest the vacant title.
