1995-12-09 Frans Botha w pts 12 Axel Schulz, Hans Martin Schleyer Hall, Stuttgart, Germany - IBF. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 116-112, 118-111, 113-115. Fighting for the title relinquished by George Foreman, Schulz (222¾) was expected to win in front of his home fans but it was Botha (227) who got the nod in what was a poor advert for a championship fight. There were no knockdowns and few highlights, and both men fought wildly at times. Schulz, who finished the fight with both eyes closing, felt he had won, especially being on home soil, but it was Botha’s jab that won the day.

Having failed a post-fight drugs test, Botha was eventually stripped of the IBF version of the championship by the courts in March 1996 and Schulz and Michael Moorer were selected to contest the vacant title.
