1996-03-02 Thulani Malinga w pts 12 Nigel Benn, International Arena, Newcastle, England - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 118-109, 115-111, 112-114. For round after round Malinga (165¾) kept the champion on the end of his left jab and follow-up rights, apart from in the fifth when he was floored by a big right to the head, and either kept out of range or closed the space down. Despite Benn (166½) looking in great condition he never really got to grips with Malinga, having struggled to beat the South African almost four years earlier. By the end of the fourth, with Benn’s right eye fast closing it looked as though he was having great difficulty timing his punches thereafter. Towards the end, as Malinga tired, Benn tried to take advantage but was unable to do so. And when he was forced to take a count from what looked to be just a slip in the last session it merely highlighted the end of his reign.
