1996-03-02 [[Tom Johnson]] w rsc 12 [[Ever Beleno]], International Arena, Newcastle, England - IBF. Referee: Blair Talmadge. Making a great start Beleno (125¾) put Johnson (126) down in the opening round, hurting him badly time and again with wide southpaw hooks during the next two sessions before the champion realised that he had to deny his rival the leverage required by moving to close quarters. With the tactics working, Johnson clawed his way back despite having to suffer the odd wallop, and in the tenth he cut Beleno on the left eye, which was the prelude to an all-out attack in the final round. Slightly ahead on the cards, Johnson made sure of victory when unleashing a terrific left hook to Beleno’s jaw, which dropped him instantly. Although Beleno was up at ‘seven’, the referee called the fight off with just 20 seconds remaining when it was clear that he was in no position to defend himself.
