Making a sluggish start as Gamez (111¼) countered effectively with right uppercuts, the champion eventually got his act together and began to pepper his rival with lefts and rights in the middle rounds. In the ninth Gamez appeared exhausted, but Sor Ploenchit (112) could not finish him off and the last three rounds were all one way as the latter pounded the Venezuelan to head and body to retain the title.
