30 March Wayne McCullough w pts 12 Jose Luis Bueno, Point Depot, Dublin, Ireland - WBC. Referee: Lou Filippo. Scorecards: 118-114, 116-112, 113-116. While superior work rate kept the weight-drained McCullough (118) ahead for nine rounds despite suffering damage to an eardrum in the second, Bueno (118) had been getting in to the fight more and more and really came on strong in the latter stages to make it exceedingly close, when firing in big right hands. By now tiring rapidly the champion took a lot of heavy shots from Bueno in that period, but showing great resolve he produced a massive effort to take the 12th session and with it the split decision. With McCullough continuing to have difficulty making the weight a match between Sirimongkol Simgmanassak and Bueno provided an ‘interim’ champion when the former stopped the Mexican in the fifth round of their contest at the Soccer Stadium, Phitsanulok, Thailand on 10 August. It eventually came as no surprise when McCullough relinquished the WBC title, immediately prior to challenging Daniel Zaragoza on 11 January 1997 for the WBC junior featherweight crown, and within days of that fight Singmanassak became the recognised champion.
