1996-04-20 Jean-Baptiste Mendy w pts 12 Lamar Murphy, Marcel Cerdan Sports Palace, Levallois-Perret, France - WBC. Referee: Mickey Vann. Scorecards: 117-112, 116-112, 117-112. Contesting the title vacated by Miguel Angel Gonzalez, the 33-year-old Mendy (133¼) upset the odds when outscoring Murphy (134½), who was expected by the American cognoscenti to take over. That was certainly the way it appeared as Murphy controlled the action for the opening three rounds, but that was before the American decided to switch from battling away at close quarters to boxing at long range. It did not take Mendy (133¼) long to realise that Murphy was playing into his hands, and from there on in he took over as his southpaw jab paved the way for combinations and left uppercuts.
