1996-04-20 Virgil Hill w pts 12 Lou Del Valle, Engelstad Arena, Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA - WBA. Referee: Hubert Earle. Scorecards: 114-113, 116-112, 116-114. In taking on a challenger who was virtually unknown it seemed like easy pickings for Hill (174½), but following a second round in which he was virtually saved by the bell after being dumped by a southpaw left all in attendance knew better. Although Hill made it out for the third and ran up the next four sessions he failed to find any rhythm against the awkward, ungainly Del Valle (175) and was unable to hurt him. The seventh saw Del Valle landing more solid punches and in the last three sessions he ripped into Hill, who was damaged around both of his eyes, stunning him several times and forcing him around the ring. Had Del Valle not looked for a one-punch finish, who knows what might have happened.
