1996-04-26 Robbie Regan w pts 12 Daniel Jimenez, National Institute of Sport, Cardiff, Wales - WBO. Referee: Genaro Rodriguez. Scorecards: 115-112, 116-111, 116-113. Jumping up two weight classes, from fly to bantam, Regan (117¾) took full advantage of the opportunity to challenge for the title, being in good shape. Although outboxed on occasion he was always prepared to work the body, and in the eighth round he floored Jimenez (117½) with a cracking left hook to the jaw towards the end of the session. Following that the Welshman was full of confidence and despite his left eye swelling rapidly he was the one who landed the more effective punches prior to being awarded the unanimous decision.

With Regan unfit to box, Jorge Eliecer Julio outpointed Oscar Maldonado over 12 rounds at the Great Western Forum, Los Angeles, California on 28 July 1997 for the ‘interim’ title before being recognised as the WBO champion when Regan was forced to vacate the title in January 1998 on failing a brain scan.
