Capitalising on his reach advantage and his southpaw jab, Yamaguchi (108) got away to a good start before being pegged back and downed in the seventh round by Murillo (107½). However, the challenger quickly hit back to drop Murillo in the eighth before the latter came back strongly to warrant the decision which went against him. Both men were cut, Yamaguchi over the left eye and Murillo over the right.
