1996-06-07 Johnny Tapia w rtd 8 Ivan Alvarez, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Richard Steele. Looking much the stronger Tapia (115) allowed his challenger into the fight in the early rounds, but once he moved up a gear there was only ever going to be one winner. Shaken by a heavy right in the sixth it was clear that Alvarez (114) would not last much longer, and having just about survived the seventh session he was immediately put under pressure in the eighth. Turning his back on Tapia after being hurt by a right to the jaw he was floored by a left to the back of the neck, whereupon his corner signalled his retirement, the finish being timed at 1.31.
