1996-08-31 Adolpho Washington w pts 12 Torsten May, Balear Bullring, Palma De Mallorca, Spain - IBF. Referee: Randy Neumann. Scorecards: 115-114, 117-111, 116-112. Fighting for the right to succeed Al Cole who relinquished the title in order to move up to heavyweight, Washington (189¾) became champion in his fourth attempt when outscoring May (188½). Having made a bad start when cut over the right eye in the opening round, May found it difficult to find a foothold in the fight especially with Washington concentrating his attacks on the damage. However, he had a good second round and went on to win three of the next four sessions when using his southpaw jab to advantage before Washington took over. Washington’s left eye had begun to swell in the fifth, but it did not stop him from negating May’s reach advantage and taking the fight to close quarters where he rolled off the last five rounds for the win. Unfortunate to be cut over the left eye in the sixth, May never looked likely to be floored at any stage.
