1996-09-20 Pernell Whitaker w pts 12 Wilfredo Rivera, Hyatt Regency Knight Centre, Miami, Florida, USA - WBC. Referee: Frank Santore. Scorecards: 113-112, 115-111, 115-113. Showing signs that he was beginning to slow up a bit the southpaw champion elected to slug it out with Rivera (147) at times and nearly paid the price, especially in the fifth when he was dropped. Quickly back on his feet, Whitaker (147) went after Rivera in the sixth and after the latter had been docked a point for going low, moments later he was floored by a cracking left counter. Rivera had soaked up a lot of punishment in that session, but was soon back on course and as Whitaker slowed and was not throwing combinations by the tenth the Puerto Rican came on strong to win three of the last four rounds. Despite it not being enough it showed that Whitaker was not the fighter he once was and, at 32 years of age, would struggle once his legs gave up on him.
