1996-10-04 Ike Quartey w pts 12 Oba Carr, MSG Theatre, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Scorecards: 116-109, 117-109, 112-112. Strangely lethargic, the champion only came to life after being deducted a point for rabbit punching in the fourth and, stung into action, he began to reach Carr (147) with hard jabs and chopping right hands. Although Carr had done reasonably well up to the sixth, at that point Quartey (147) was on a charge and in the eighth it was the weary American who was deducted a point for low blows. Carr was now being hammered as Quartey started to set him up with solid jabs, while also ripping in hooks and uppercuts to the head and body, but he came back well to win the tenth and 11th. In that penultimate round Carr put Quartey down after the latter slipped, and despite what certain reports claimed it was considered to be a knockdown by the judges. However, the final session saw Carr almost out from exhaustion and glad to hear the final bell.
