1996-10-06 Jose Luis Lopez w rtd 5 Luis Ramon Campas, Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBO. Referee: Raul Caiz. In a battle of Mexicans it was the champion who came out on top after Campas (147) was forced to retire at the end of the fifth round, having taken a battering and carrying a badly damaged right eye. Right from the start Lopez (147) took the fight to the brawling Campas with solid jabs, and in the second a left-right-left to the jaw sent the latter crashing. Back on his feet and realising that he could not sit back Campas tore after Lopez but was soon driven back. It was just a matter of time by now and after Campas kept running into left jabs and left hooks in the fourth and fifth sessions, barely able to see from his right eye, it was obvious to his corner that he was through for the night. Lopez forfeited the WBO version of the title in January 1997 after testing positive for marijuana.
