1996-10-19 Keith Holmes w rsc 12 Richie Woodhall, Showplace Arena, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, USA - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. Despite suffering surgery to his right elbow just 12 days before challenging Holmes (157) for his title, instead of pulling out Woodhall (158) decided not to withdraw, a decision he might have later regretted. Up against the southpaw champion was difficult enough, but unable to fire in straight rights Woodhall restricted his chances before a punch was thrown. Still, Woodhall was in front after six rounds due to excellent left-hand work, but after being hurt in the seventh by a searing uppercut he began to lose ground. With Holmes chipping away with southpaw leads and long lefts and with Woodhall tiring rapidly he was eventually floored by a cracking left hook in the 11th. Although the Englishman got up at ‘nine’ he was all over the place and after the champion had thrown half a dozen undefended blows the referee stopped the contest with just 28 seconds of the session remaining.
