1996-10-19 Phillip Holiday w pts 12 Joel Diaz, Wembley Indoor Arena, Johannesburg, South Africa - IBF. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 119-109, 119-110, 119-110. Taking the fight to champion at the start, the durable Diaz (134½) showed plenty of spirit, despite being cut badly over the left eye in the second round, and was always trying to turn things around. Unfortunately for the American-based Mexican he lacked the power to do real damage and although he often scored with accurate blows to Holiday’s head it was never enough. Once Holiday (133¾) had tightened his defence and began to pick up the pace, landing from head to body, there was only going to be one winner, but the tough Diaz certainly made him work for his victory.
