1997-01-18 Mauricio Pastrana w pts 12 Michael Carbajal, Thomas and Mack Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 112-116, 115-113, 115-114. In an interesting contest, Pastrana (106½) quickly got down to work, almost dropping the champion in the third round. The contest then seesawed back and forth without Carbajal (108) getting a real grip on the proceedings and allowing himself to be outworked. Afterwards, he explained his lacklustre performance on continually trying to take the Colombian out with one punch.

After Pastrana forfeited the IBF version of the title for failing to attend the weigh-in for a defence against Manuel Jesus Herrera in May, the latter was matched against Anis Roga to find a successor.
