1997-02-08 Naseem Hamed w rsc 8 Tom Johnson, London Arena, Millwall, London, England - IBF/WBO. Referee: Rudy Battle. In a battle to unify two titles, Hamed (126) showed that he really could fight at the top level despite being slightly below par, when taking Johnson (125½) apart in eight rounds. Surviving several sticky moments, especially in the second and third, and having lost the first five rounds, Johnson had his best round to date in the sixth when keeping Hamed at bay with a good jab and staying well out of range. Towards the end of the seventh, Johnson was really shaken up and in the eighth Hamed was on him like a tiger, cutting him under the right eye and blasting him with some big punches, but still the IBF champion was there. Then it happened. Sensing that Johnson, stumbling around under the weight of punches was all in and ready to be taken, Hamed stepped in with a slamming right uppercut which put his man down and effectively ended the fight. Although Johnson was up at ‘eight’, he was in no condition to fight on and the referee wisely called a halt at 2.27 of the session.
