1997-02-22 Arturo Gatti w pts 12 Tracy Harris Patterson, Convention Centre Ballroom, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 118-108, 117-109, 116-110. Having gone close in their previous contest, Patterson (130) probably thought that he had the style to deal with Gatti (130), but was dumbfounded when the champion put his new-found boxing skills on display. Although Patterson felt he had made a great start when flooring Gatti with a body punch in the first round it did not count, despite it looking good, because the referee decided it was low. Thereafter, apart from in the sixth when he tore into Gatti with a vengeance, Patterson went into a shell doing very little and his lethargy was compounded when his right eye began to close in the eighth, prior to a slip in the ninth being ruled as a knockdown. With Patterson throwing very little throughout, Gatti’s winning margin was fairly substantial.
