1997-03-21 Montell Griffin w disq 9 Roy Jones, Taj Mahal Resort & Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBC. Referee: Tony Perez. Making his first defence, and a huge favourite, Jones (175) lost his unbeaten record when being disqualified at 2.27 of the ninth round after twice hitting Griffin (175) when he was down. Prior to that the fight was virtually even after Griffin had come back well after being dropped in the seventh by a short left to the chin. Coming into the ninth with his left eye swollen, when Jones picked up the pace again a right to the head had Griffin all over the place and in a bad way. Eventually dropping to the floor on one knee, Griffin was shocked to be hit by a right-left hook before toppling over face first on the canvas. Initially, the referee began to count over Griffin before disqualifying Jones, an action that was later explained away as being one where the stricken fighter was given every chance of continuing if he had been able.
