1997-03-29 Alex Sanchez w pts 12 Jose Victor Burgos, Hilton Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 115-110, 113-112, 114-111. Despite scoring a couple of knockdowns, Sanchez (105) was made to work hard by the flashy Burgos (105), who often took the fight to the champion in an effort to secure the victory. Although it had started well for Sanchez, after having a point deducted for hitting his man while on the floor in the first he lost a bit of ground in the middle sessions before coming on strong in the last three rounds. Prior to that it could have gone either way, but with a unification fight lined up against the WBC champion, Ricardo Lopez, Sanchez dropped Burgos heavily with a left hook in the 11th before having his man in trouble again in the 12th to clear the decks for the showdown with Lopez.
