1997-04-12 Raul Marquez w rsc 9 Anthony Stephens, Tropicana Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Richard Steele. Fighting for the title that formerly belonged to Terry Norris, Marquez (153) won when the referee rescued Stephens (154) at 1.47 of the ninth round after the latter had gone to the floor following a clash of heads and, on getting up, was being battered by heavy blows without return. At the finish, Marquez required 30 stitches to repair cuts on the forehead and right eye, while Stephens was also badly cut on the right eye. The contest started with Stephens, countering his southpaw opponent, doing well, but by the fourth Marquez was beginning to get on top and in the eighth he was looking to finish it. At that stage, Stephens had little left, something that influenced the referee to call the fight off when he did.
