1997-04-19 [[Bernard Hopkins]] w rsc 7 [[John David Jackson]], Memorial Auditorium, Shreveport, Louisiana, USA - IBF. Referee: Johnny Femia. Although the champion was cautious during the opening couple of rounds he began to find Jackson (156) with overarm rights in the third and in the fourth dropped his southpaw opponent with a similar blow. By the fifth, Jackson was far more tentative, but Hopkins (156½) was not able to take advantage until another big right followed by a body shot put his rival down in the sixth. The fight came to an end at 2.22 of the seventh after Hopkins had blasted away non-stop at Jackson, who was not fighting back at the time of the referee’s stoppage. After the fight, Hopkins said it was acting as Jackson’s sparring partner at the start of his career that had taught him how to handle southpaws.
