1997-05-03 [[Robin Reid]] w pts 12 [[Henry Wharton]], Nynex Arena, Manchester, England - WBC. Referee: Larry O’Connell. Scorecards: 118-111, 117-113, 114-114. A little slow to get going, Wharton (168) lost the first two sessions before coming back well to edge the next three. Subsequently, however, Wharton failed to take a round on at least two of the judges’ cards and by the ninth his face was badly swollen, testament to the champion’s more accurate punches. In the next round a big right also opened up a cut on the bridge of his nose. Boxing on the back foot, Reid (166¼) scored well with accurate left jabs and rights as Wharton followed him around, but was never able to relax against an opponent who punched his weight and was always dangerous, especially with the left hook. How one of the judges managed to call it a draw was certainly a puzzle as one could not have been anything but impressed with Reid’s performance.
