1997-05-17 [[Luisito Espinosa]] w tdec 8 [[Manuel Medina]], Luneta Park, Manila, Philippines - WBC. Referee: Jay Nady. Scorecards: 78-73, 78-73, 77-75. An interesting fight saw Espinosa (125¾) start well with the jab, winning the first three rounds before Medina (126) picked it up to win the next two sessions. Espinosa regained control in the sixth, doing good work with heavy right uppercuts to head and body, only for Medina to come back strongly in the seventh as he looked to take the play away from the champion. Although the eighth started promisingly with Espinosa scoring a knockdown, just as it was getting interesting there was a head clash which ruled him out of the fight on the 1.22 mark after he picked up a deep gash on his left eye. With the offender, Medina, being deducted a point, Espinosa was declared the winner after the scorecards were totted up in his favour.
