1997-05-31 Vince Phillips w rsc 10 Kostya Tszyu, Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Benjie Esteves. In what was a huge shock, Phillips (140) proved that boxing was a game of styles and opportunities as he took his when forcing a stoppage at 1.22 of the tenth round over a champion whose star was on the rise. After Tszyu (140) had been dropped by a big right in the seventh, the fight changed completely and picking up where he left off in the seventh Phillips was still sending in big punches during the eighth and ninth. It was now apparent that Tszyu had no defence against a right through the middle and he was eventually rescued by the referee when on his way to the canvas, with both eyes cut and badly deflated. Phillips also had a nasty gash over the right eye.
