1997-06-28 Evander Holyfield w disq 3 Mike Tyson, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Mills Lane. After dominating the first two rounds with his better boxing, neither the champion nor the rest of the world for that matter would have expected Tyson (218) to have twice bitten him in the following session and get himself disqualified. Having started the third so well, Tyson was still in the fight, but after a fierce struggle in a clinch he bit a lump out of Holyfield’s right ear. With Holyfield (218) jumping up and down in rage and agony, the referee took four minutes out to decide what to do next, eventually deducting two points from Tyson before sending them back to work for the final minute. At the end of the round following another bite, this time on Holyfield’s left ear, Tyson was thrown out of the fight. The following day, Tyson admitted that he had lost control after Holyfield had been allowed to butt him without getting a point’s deduction and that he had taken the law into his own hands. While Holyfield had an unsuccessful operation to stitch his piece of missing ear back, the Nevada State Boxing Commission revoked Tyson’s licence indefinitely and fined him three million dollars.
