1997-07-05 Steve Collins w rsc 3 Craig Cummings, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland - WBO. Referee: Roy Francis. On the floor in the opening ten seconds after being caught by a right-left to the temple, the champion returned the favour when a thumping right put Cummings (161½) down for the mandatory count not long after. Pushed over at the end of the second and cut below the left eye in the third, Cummings was then put under a constant battering as Collins (167¾) looked to finish the fight and with the American not fighting back the referee rescued him at 1.17 of the session.

After Collins relinquished the WBO version of the title on 2 October, having failed to force a championship match against Roy Jones, Chris Eubank and Joe Calzaghe were matched to find a successor.
