1997-07-18 Johnny Tapia w pts 12 Danny Romero, Thomas and Mack Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF/WBO. Referee: Mitch Halpern. Scorecards: 115-113, 116-112, 116-112. In an outstanding clash of world champions, Tapia (114) proved to be the better man, winning four of the last five rounds while keeping a lid on his up-and-down temperament to box to instructions. Despite there being no knockdowns, with the men knowing each other well it was an intense battle for supremacy which pitted Tapia’s speed and precision against the power of Romero (114). Although sampling some heavy blows, Tapia avoided the follow up by moving and then getting his own punches off, the jab being his most effective weapon on the night.
