1997-07-20 Bernard Hopkins w co 11 Glengoffe Johnson, Fantasy Springs Casino Resort, Indio, California, USA - IBF. Referee: Pat Russell. Defending his title for the fifth time, Hopkins (160) at last showed that he was the best man out there, having dealt with the tough Johnson (159¾) in championship fashion. In winning every round, Hopkins dominated Johnson, throwing punches from head to body and never ceasing to let the latter off the hook. Although Hopkins hurt Johnson badly in the second and fifth rounds, the latter maintained a solid defence right up to the ninth when the champion was starting to grind him down. By then Johnson’s right eye was beginning to close and following non-stop aggression from Hopkins the referee came to the challenger’s rescue at 1.23 of the 11th when he was unable to fight back.
