1997-07-26 Steve Johnston w pts 12 Hiroyuki Sakamoto, The Arena, Yokohama, Japan - WBC. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Scorecards: 119-111, 117-111, 113-115. Bobbing and weaving from the start, Johnston (134½) countered Sakamoto’s wild attacks with southpaw jabs and solid lefts through the middle as the latter continually came forward. To be fair to Sakamoto (135), who favoured a sweeping hook, he never stopped trying and his stamina was excellent, but Johnston was just too clever for him and how one of the judges saw the challenger as the winner was inexplicable. There were no knockdowns.
