1997-08-09 [[Vince Phillips]] w rsc 3 [[Micky Ward]], The Roxy, Boston, Massachusetts, USA - IBF. Referee: Dick Flaherty. Making his first defence, Phillips (139½) started well with left jabs and solid right crosses finding Ward (139¾) in the first round before opening up with body punches that forced the latter to cover up. After switching between southpaw and orthodox in the third and having done reasonably well, Ward was caught by a three-punch combination that opened up a two-inch gash on his left eye. With blood flowing, the referee tried to let Ward carry on, but with a second of the session remaining, on the advice of the ringside doctor, he was forced to call a halt as the injury was deemed to be too bad for the latter to continue.
