1997-08-09 Vince Phillips w rsc 3 Micky Ward, The Roxy, Boston, Massachusetts, USA - IBF. Referee: Dick Flaherty. Making his first defence, Phillips (139½) started well with left jabs and solid right crosses before opening up with body punches that forced Ward (139¾) to cover up. After switching between southpaw and orthodox in the third, and having done reasonably well, Ward was caught by a three-punch combination that opened up a two-inch gash on his left eye. With blood flowing the referee tried to let Ward carry on, but with a second of the session remaining he was forced to call a halt as the injury was deemed to be too bad for the latter to continue.
