1997-08-16 Marcelo Dominguez w pts 12 Akim Tafer, Sports Palace, Le Cannet, France - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 115-114, 116-114, 117-112. Having stopped Tafer (189¼) to win the ‘interim’ title, Dominguez (190) was favoured to beat the Frenchman again but had to go the whole route to do so in what was a much harder contest. Twice hit below the belt in the third, Tafer, who had come to the ring with tendon damage to his right elbow, was given a fair rest and when Dominguez repeated the foul in the 11th he had a point deducted from his score. Between rounds seven and nine, in his own words Tafer admitted that he’d had a bad day at the office, lacking sharpness and failing take advantage of his reach advantage as Dominguez pressed him. Those three sessions were the difference between winning and losing and two teeth had to be removed after the contest due to the battering Tafer had received in the eighth.
