1997-08-23 Ricardo Lopez w rsc 5 Alex Sanchez, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBC/WBO. Referee: Arthur Mercante (jnr). In making his 20th consecutive defence, Lopez (104¾) again proved superior among the smallest of men, putting Sanchez (104¾) down in the second, following two right crosses, and again in the fifth with a tremendous left hook. On rising it was clear that the WBO champion could not continue and the referee waived it off on the 1.58 mark. With Lopez seemingly not interested in defending the WBO version of the title, Eric Jamili stopped Mickey Cantwell in the eighth round of their ‘interim’ championship contest at the London Arena, Millwall, London, England on 19 December. Jamili was eventually awarded the WBO title in March 1998 when it finally became clear that Lopez was not going to make a defence. Meanwhile, the WBC also set up an ‘interim’ title bout which was won by Wandee Chor Charoen, who outpointed Rocky Lin over 12 rounds on 23 August 1998 at The Arena, Yokohama, Japan.
