1997-09-12 Steve Johnston w pts 12 Saul Duran, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Jay Nady. Scorecards: 117-111, 119-110, 118-110. Forced to change his fight plan after an old cut over his right eye reopened in the first round, the southpaw champion went on the attack in a bold bid to end the contest summarily and banged in rights and lefts before settling down to his boxing. In the sixth the hardy Duran (134) outworked Johnston (134) for much of the time, but when the latter, who was having great difficulty with his vision, went on the back foot in the following rounds he gave a superb display of moving under the punches and countering. Although Duran had a storming 11th, he couldn’t sustain the effort and Johnston came back to pressure his rival through to the final bell.
