1997-09-13 Raul Marquez w pts 12 Keith Mullings, Thomas & Mack Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Mitch Halpern. Scorecards: 115-113, 116-112, 113-115. Coming in as a late replacement for Luis Ramon Campas, and having lost three of his previous five, Mullings (154) made a great showing when running the southpaw champion close, while confounding those who though he had no chance. With Marquez (154) consistently scoring well from to head and body and Mullings relying on solid one-twos that eventually caused swellings over the champion’s eyes, the fight went first one way and then the other. Interestingly, all three cards had both men dead level at the end of the eighth. After a clash of heads in the ninth Marquez’s right eye was cut, but he was still looking for Mullings and both men fired off punches right through to the final bell in a fight that was difficult to call.
