1997-09-20 Lou Del Valle w rsc 8 Eddy Smulders, Tivoli Ice Rink, Aachen, Germany - WBA. Referee: John Coyle. Contesting the title vacated by Dariusz Michalczewski, Del Valle (174¾) started the better of the pair and a left hook towards the end of the opening round cut Smulders (175) under the left eye. The second was even worse for Smulders, who took two counts after being caught by heavy southpaw lefts and struggled to make it to the end of the session. Smulders surprised all and sundry when he charged out of his corner to take the next two rounds, hurting Del Valle with right hands and looking to make a real fight of it. Del Valle was even sent out minus his gumshield in the fourth. From the fifth Del Valle began to get back on top again and in the seventh two left hooks sent Smulders to the floor. Although the Dutchman got up and made it to the bell, he was immediately in trouble at the start of the eighth, whereupon the referee rescued him with just 22 seconds on the clock.
