1997-09-20 [[Michael Loewe]] w pts 12[[Michael Carruth]], Tivoli Sports Hall, Aachen, Germany - WBO. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 115-114, 117-111, 114-114. By failing to impose himself on Loewe (145¼) early enough the southpaw challenger possibly lost his best chance of winning the title, despite making a reasonable start. Cut on the right eye in the fourth obviously hampered Loewe from thereon, but Carruth (145) failed to take advantage of the situation when allowing the champion to keep him at bay with a long left lead and to tie him up in the clinches. Carruth was also guilty of throwing one punch at a time and although he occasionally countered well he did not work hard enough until coming with a rush to win the last two rounds. It was always close and Loewe, with his better work, just about deserved the win.
