1997-09-20 Michael Loewe w pts 12 Michael Carruth, Tivoli Sports Hall, Aachen, Germany - WBO. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 115-114, 117-111, 114-114. By failing to impose himself on Loewe (145¼) early enough the southpaw challenger possibly lost his best chance of winning the title, despite making a reasonable start. Cut on the right eye in the fourth obviously hampered Loewe from there onwards, but Carruth (145) failed to take advantage of the situation when allowing the champion to keep him at bay with a long left lead while tying him up in the clinches. Carruth was also guilty of throwing one punch at a time, and although he occasionally countered well he did not work hard enough until coming with a rush to win the last two rounds. Although it was always close, Loewe, with his better work, just about deserved the win.

After Loewe relinquished the WBO version of the title when unfit for a defence against Leonard Townsend in February 1998, a Townsend v Akhmed Kotiev bout went ahead to decide the vacancy. Loewe later announced his retirement.
