1997-10-04 [[Arturo Gatti]] w rsc 5 [[Gabriel Ruelas]], Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Benji Esteves. Having struggled to make the weight, Gatti (130) started with the jab before an astounding fourth round changed everything. The champion had already felt the power of Ruelas (130) early on when being forced to take a few big lefts and rights and in the fourth, with the latter under pressure, he was drawn into a ferrocious exchange which left him virtually out on his feet at the end of the session after a left hook to the jaw almost removed him from his senses. Beginning the fifth in full flow, Ruelas smashed away relentlessly at Gatti, who was now cut under the left eye, but just when he was looking at sea the champion unleashed a mighty left hook which dropped his rival heavily. Amazingly Ruelas somehow got his feet, but the referee decided there and then that he was in no fit state to continue and called it off, the finish being timed at 2.22. Gatti relinquished the IBF version of the title in December due to increasing weight problems.
