1997-10-04 Lennox Lewis w rsc 1 Andrew Golota, Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBC. Referee: Joe Cortez. Moving in quickly with the jab, the champion immediately put pressure on Golota (244) and before long two heavy rights to the head had him down for ‘eight’. Golota had no defence to speak of and he was immediately in trouble again as Lewis (244) raked him with at least ten solid blows that sent him down, slumped in a corner. There was no way Golota could fight on even if he had managed to rise in time and after just 95 seconds the referee called a halt. Afterwards, Lewis, whose game plan was to get the fight over with quickly in case of fouling, felt that the referee had given Golota at least 20 seconds to recover from the first knockdown.
