1997-10-05 [[Yong-Soo Choi]] drew 12 [[Takanori Hatakeyama]], Ryogoku Sumo Arena, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Mitch Halpern. Scorecards: 116-114, 114-116, 114-114. Over 12 hard-fought rounds the judges ultimately found it difficult to split the pair. The contest got away to a flyer as Hatakeyama (130) looked to outscore his rival, which he did for the first three rounds, while the champion concentrated on the body. In the fourth, however, Hatakeyama sustained a nasty cut over the left eye which hindered his vision from then on, but becoming more aggressive the fight went first one way and then the other as both tried to dominate. Although he had taken the lead by the eighth, as Hatakeyama began to feel the effects of the body attacks Choi (129½) picked up the pace to take the last three sessions, thus evening up the score.
