1997-10-11 Joe Calzaghe w pts 12 Chris Eubank, The Arena, Sheffield, England - WBO. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 116-111, 118-110, 118-109. Contesting the belt vacated by Steve Collins, Calzaghe (167¼) clearly beat the former champion and in doing so showed that he had both the skill and power to command centre stage. Eubank (167¾) was down twice from left hands, inside the opening 15 seconds and again in the tenth, before coming back to make Calzaghe work hard for his win. While Eubank showed that he was as game as a pebble in defeat, it was Calzaghe’s hand speed that was too much for him and even when he hit back hard the latter proved that he had a chin to match his southpaw boxing skills.
