1997-11-08 Evander Holyfield w rtd 8 Michael Moorer, Thomas & Mack Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF/WBA. Referee: Mitch Halpern. With both men putting up their titles there was much expectancy that the heavyweight division was not far away from being unified. Moorer (223), the IBF champion, made the better start when taking the opening two rounds and staggering Holyfield (214) on one occasion at least. However, the WBA champion turned things around in the third, despite being cut over the right eye from a clash of heads, and although Moorer remained a danger he was the one carrying the extra firepower. That became clear in the fifth when heavy combination punches had Moorer over for ‘eight’ and following a less hectic sixth round, Holyfield had his southpaw opponent down twice more before he was saved by the bell. The eighth round turned out to be the last. Slow to get going, Holyfield eventually put Moorer down twice more with heavy combinations doing the damage before being retired by his corner at the end of the session.
