1997-12-06 [[Luis Ramon Campas]] w rsc 8 [[Raul Marquez]], Boardwalk Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: James Condon. The fight began slowly with both men having a good look at each other, Campas (154) taking his time and the champion sending out southpaw jabs, but at the end of the third it all changed as the latter picked up a swollen right eye and a bad gash over his left eye following an exchange of blows. Prior to the fight it had been feared that the facial damage that saw Marquez (153½) have 70 stitches inserted after his previous contest had not had enough time to heal and this was his worst nightmare. Somehow Marquez kept going, but Campas was getting to him and with the blood flowing in the seventh he was badly rocked by combinations. Bravely fighting on, the unbeaten Marquez, who had nothing left, was finally rescued by the referee at 2.29 of the eighth when being battered by a torrent of punches on the ropes with nowhere to go.
